About Hyundai Kona
The Hyundai Kona is a subcompact crossover SUV introduced in 2017 as Hyundai expanded its range below the Tucson. Named after the Kona district of Hawaii, it was developed primarily for urban use, combining compact exterior dimensions with an elevated driving position and the versatility of a small SUV. It is sold internationally, although powertrains, trim levels and equipment vary by market.
The first generation established the model’s distinctive character through bold styling and a broad selection of versions. Depending on region and model year, the range included petrol and diesel engines, all-wheel drive, the Kona Hybrid and the fully electric Kona Electric. Hyundai also offered the sport-styled N Line and the higher-performance Kona N. A mid-cycle update arrived during this generation.
The second-generation Kona was launched in 2023 with larger dimensions, increased cabin and luggage space, and a more technology-focused design. Hyundai developed this generation around the electric version before adapting it for internal-combustion and hybrid powertrains. N Line models continue to provide a sportier appearance.
Within Hyundai’s SUV range, the Kona sits near the smaller end of the line-up and generally below the Tucson. It is known for expressive design, manageable size, practical packaging and an unusually wide choice of propulsion systems for its class.
