About Hyundai IONIQ
The Hyundai IONIQ is a compact five-door liftback developed specifically for electrified powertrains. Introduced in 2016, it was the first production model offered in hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric forms using the same body and dedicated platform. This broad choice made it an important step in Hyundai’s move from conventional vehicles towards wider electrification.
The original IONIQ was produced in a single generation at Hyundai’s Ulsan plant in South Korea. A substantial update arrived in 2019, bringing revised styling, upgraded connectivity and improved technology. The Electric version also received a larger battery, while specifications and availability varied by market. Production of the original series ended in July 2022.
All versions used an aerodynamic fastback-style shape designed to reduce drag and support efficiency. The Hybrid combined a petrol engine with electric assistance, the Plug-in Hybrid added external charging and a useful electric-driving capability, and the Electric operated solely on battery power. The model became known for low energy consumption, practical everyday dimensions and relatively accessible electrified motoring.
Within Hyundai’s range, the IONIQ served as a technology-focused alternative to conventional compact cars. Its name later became associated with Hyundai’s separate family of numbered battery-electric models, but the original IONIQ remains a distinct model line.
