About Hyundai i40
The Hyundai i40 is a D-segment family car developed mainly for European buyers. Introduced in 2011 and produced until 2019, it largely filled the position previously held by the Sonata in Hyundai’s European range. Although designed and engineered at the company’s European development centre in Rüsselsheim, Germany, the model was manufactured in South Korea.
Hyundai offered the i40 as a five-door wagon and a four-door sedan, with the more practical wagon arriving first. Depending on the market and model year, the range included petrol and diesel engines with manual, conventional automatic or dual-clutch transmissions. All versions used a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout.
The i40 remained in a single generation but received significant updates in 2015 and 2018. These brought revised exterior styling, updated engines and transmissions, and additional comfort, safety and connectivity equipment. Specifications and trim names varied between countries.
Positioned above the i30, the i40 competed with established mid-size family and business cars. It is particularly known for its spacious cabin, comfortable road manners and generous equipment. The wagon added substantial luggage capacity, making it well suited to family, company-car and long-distance use. Hyundai did not introduce a direct i40 successor in Europe after production ended.
