About Hyundai H-1

The Hyundai H-1 is a large multipurpose van introduced in 1997. Also known as the Starex in many markets, it was developed for both passenger transport and light commercial work. Within Hyundai’s range, it occupied the space between a family MPV and a conventional cargo van.

Two main generations were produced. The original H-1 established the model’s practical, box-shaped format, while the redesigned second generation arrived in 2007 and was widely sold as the Grand Starex. Later updates revised its styling, interior and equipment without changing its core purpose. The Staria eventually succeeded the H-1 in Hyundai’s people-mover range.

Versions varied considerably by country. The range included passenger wagons, minibuses and panel vans, along with less common pick-up, taxi and ambulance conversions. Regional names included H-1 Travel and H-1 Cargo, while passenger and commercial derivatives were marketed as the iMax, i800 and iLoad in selected countries. Petrol and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, and different seating layouts were offered depending on market and model year.

The H-1 is primarily known for its spacious cabin, flexible configurations, sliding side doors and ability to carry people or goods. These qualities made it a practical choice for large families, shuttle operators, businesses and public-service fleets.
