About Hyundai Galloper
The Hyundai Galloper is a body-on-frame four-wheel-drive SUV produced in South Korea from 1991 to 2003. Developed and initially manufactured by Hyundai Precision, it was based on the first-generation Mitsubishi Pajero under a licensing arrangement. The model helped Hyundai establish a presence in the growing domestic SUV market and was also exported to parts of Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
Two main generations were offered. The original Galloper retained the Pajero’s angular styling and rugged mechanical layout, while the Galloper II arrived in 1997 with a substantially updated exterior and interior. Despite its more modern appearance, the second version continued to use much of the earlier platform and drivetrain design.
The range included short-wheelbase three-door and long-wheelbase five-door bodies. Depending on market and year, buyers could choose naturally aspirated or turbocharged 2.5-litre diesel engines and a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine, with manual or automatic transmissions. Variations included utility-focused models and better-equipped versions such as the Exceed and the compact-looking Galloper Innovation.
Known for straightforward construction, selectable four-wheel drive and practical passenger capacity, the Galloper occupied a rugged position in Hyundai’s line-up before modern road-oriented SUVs became dominant. It was eventually replaced by the Terracan.
