About Hyundai Equus
The Hyundai Equus is a full-size luxury sedan that served as Hyundai’s flagship before Genesis became a separate premium brand. Introduced in South Korea in 1999, it was also marketed as the Centennial in selected countries. Production ended in 2016, with its place in the market subsequently taken by the Genesis G90.
The Equus was produced in two generations. The first-generation model used a front-wheel-drive layout and established Hyundai in the large luxury-sedan class, mainly in its home market. The second generation arrived in 2009 with rear-wheel drive, more advanced technology and broader international distribution. It entered North America for the 2011 model year.
Specifications differed by region. Depending on the market and year, the Equus was available with V6 or V8 petrol engines. Hyundai also offered an extended-wheelbase Equus Limousine designed primarily for chauffeured transport. In the United States, second-generation cars used V8 power and were sold in Signature and more highly equipped Ultimate versions.
The Equus is known for its spacious, quiet cabin, comfort-focused ride and extensive passenger amenities, particularly in the rear seating area. It placed greater emphasis on refinement than sporting character. Positioned above the Genesis sedan in Hyundai’s range, it represented the brand’s attempt to compete directly in the established flagship luxury-saloon segment.
