About Honda Z
The Honda Z name was used for two distinct small cars separated by more than two decades. The original model, introduced in Japan in 1970, was a compact three-door coupé related to the N360 and N600. It combined front-wheel drive and four-seat packaging with unusually sporty styling, including a distinctive dark-framed rear window. Japanese buyers received the kei-class Z360, while larger-engined Z600 versions were offered in several export markets. Trim variations included ACT, PRO, TS, GT and GS models. Production ended in 1974.
Honda revived the name in 1998 for an unrelated Japanese-market kei SUV. This second Z was a tall three-door, four-seat model intended to provide the utility and raised driving position of an SUV within Japan’s compact kei-car limits. It occupied a specialised position in Honda’s range alongside more conventional small cars such as the Life.
Its defining feature was the UM-4 platform, which placed the 656 cc three-cylinder engine beneath the rear-seat area. This underfloor mid-engine layout helped provide a flat, practical cabin while supporting a Real Time four-wheel-drive system. Naturally aspirated Z and turbocharged Z Turbo versions were offered, both with a four-speed automatic transmission. Large 15-inch tyres, useful ground clearance and flexible rear seating reinforced its recreational character. Production of this version ended in 2002, leaving the Z known for two unconventional interpretations of Honda’s smallest-car engineering.
