About Honda Vamos
The Honda Vamos is a Japanese kei-class utility vehicle produced in two distinct eras. The original Vamos Honda, launched in 1970, was a compact open-body recreational and work vehicle. It remained in production until 1973 and stood out as an unconventional alternative to conventional kei cars of the period.
Honda revived the name in 1999 for a very different model: a tall, box-shaped kei passenger wagon closely related to the Acty commercial van. This version was sold in Japan until May 2018. Rather than passing through several complete redesigns, the modern Vamos formed one long-running generation that received periodic styling, equipment and mechanical updates.
Within Honda’s range, the Vamos occupied the space between a basic commercial microvan and a small passenger-oriented minivan. Its compact exterior, sliding rear doors, long wheelbase and mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout helped provide a spacious and practical cabin. Four-wheel drive was also available, while engine choices included naturally aspirated and turbocharged 660 cc units, depending on year and grade.
Major variations included M, L and Turbo versions. The Vamos Hobio, introduced in 2003, added a higher roof and a more adaptable cargo area aimed at hobbies and outdoor use. A Hobio Pro commercial model was also offered. The Vamos is best known for efficient packaging, manoeuvrability and flexible load-carrying ability within Japan’s kei-car limits.
