About Honda Torneo
The Honda Torneo is a four-door sedan developed for the Japanese market as a sister model to the sixth-generation Accord. Introduced in September 1997, it was sold through Honda’s Primo and Verno dealer networks, while the Accord was offered by Clio dealers. The two models shared their main engineering and dimensions, but the Torneo received distinctive front and rear styling and a slightly sportier identity.
Only one generation was produced, with updates during its relatively short production run and a notable facelift in 2000. The range included practical 1.8- and 2.0-litre versions, automatic and manual transmissions, and selected four-wheel-drive variants. Sport-oriented SiR and SiR-T models used a higher-performance 2.0-litre DOHC VTEC engine, making them popular among drivers seeking a discreet sports sedan.
The flagship Torneo Euro R arrived in 2000. It combined a 2.2-litre H22A DOHC VTEC engine with a five-speed manual gearbox and more focused chassis and interior equipment. This version is the best-known Torneo and established the model’s reputation for high-revving performance, responsive handling and understated styling.
Production ended in 2002 when Honda introduced the next-generation Accord without a separate Torneo derivative. The Torneo therefore occupies a specific place in Honda’s lineup as a Japan-only Accord alternative with practical sedan packaging and several distinctive performance versions.
