About Honda Today
Honda Today was a Japanese-market kei car produced from 1985 to 1998. It marked Honda’s return to the kei passenger-car segment after a decade-long absence and sat below the City and Civic in the brand’s range. Designed around Japan’s kei regulations, it combined very compact dimensions with efficient interior packaging and a low-roof profile.
The first generation began as a three-door light commercial vehicle before passenger versions joined the line-up. Early cars used a 545 cc two-cylinder engine, followed by 547 cc and later 656 cc three-cylinder units as regulations evolved. Front-wheel drive was standard, while selected versions offered four-wheel drive. Variations included Pro and Humming models, along with trims such as Pochette and Season.
A second generation arrived in 1993 with greater emphasis on passenger comfort. It was initially offered in two-door form, with the four-door Today Associe added soon afterwards. A 1996 update introduced conventional three- and five-door hatchback bodies. Sportier Xi and Rs versions used Honda’s MTREC engine technology, while other models focused on everyday urban transport. Known for its light weight, space-efficient design and distinctive single windscreen wiper, the Today was Honda’s conventional car-shaped entry in a kei market increasingly favouring taller vehicles. Production ended in 1998 as the Honda Life assumed the brand’s main kei passenger-car role.
