About Honda S-MX
The Honda S-MX is a compact multi-purpose vehicle introduced in Japan in November 1996 and produced until 2002. It formed part of Honda’s Creative Mover range, offering a smaller and more lifestyle-focused alternative to a conventional minivan. Its short, tall body, boxy styling and unusual door layout gave it a distinctive position in the company’s late-1990s line-up.
The S-MX was built in a single generation, with updates made during its production run. It used a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and a four-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive versions were available, while the LOWDOWN variant featured reduced ride height and sportier exterior details. Early models commonly used four-seat bench-style layouts, while later versions added five-seat configurations with separate front seats.
The model is best known for combining compact exterior dimensions with a spacious, flexible cabin. Some four-seat versions allowed the front and rear bench seats to fold into a near-flat arrangement, reinforcing the S-MX’s leisure-oriented character. Its practical packaging, bold appearance and range of standard, 4WD and lowered versions made it an unconventional crossover between a hatchback, compact MPV and urban leisure vehicle.
