About Honda Orthia

The Honda Orthia is a five-door station wagon developed primarily for the Japanese market. Introduced in 1996 and discontinued in 2002, it combined the manageable dimensions and road manners of a passenger car with the cargo capacity expected from a practical family wagon. Honda described it as a “sports utility wagon”, positioning it for both daily use and leisure activities.

The Orthia remained within a single generation, although a substantial 1999 facelift brought revised front and rear styling, an updated cabin and changes to the model range. Early cars were offered with 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre DOHC petrol engines. Later versions used a 2.0-litre engine across the range. Depending on year and grade, buyers could choose front-wheel drive or Honda’s Real Time 4WD system, along with manual or automatic transmission.

Major variations included GX, GX-S, GX Aero and S Selection models, followed by grades such as B, M, S, M4 and L4 after the facelift. The sport-focused S version featured lowered suspension, larger wheels and dedicated interior trim.

The Orthia is best known for its useful cargo area, separate opening rear glass hatch, straightforward controls and relatively car-like handling. Within Honda’s late-1990s lineup, it served as a compact, versatile alternative to larger estate cars and emerging sport utility vehicles.
