About Honda Life

The Honda Life is a small passenger car best known as a long-running part of Honda’s Japanese kei-car range. The original Life arrived in 1971 as the successor to the N360. It used a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and was offered in two- and four-door forms, alongside practical commercial derivatives. Production ended in 1974 as Honda concentrated on the larger Civic.

Honda revived the name in 1997 for a tall, five-door kei hatchback designed around everyday urban use. Across five Japanese generations, the Life developed from a simple economy car into a more spacious and refined mini vehicle. Its compact exterior dimensions, upright body and efficient cabin packaging made it suitable for crowded roads, narrow parking spaces and routine family transport.

Later Japanese models generally used 660 cc three-cylinder engines, with naturally aspirated and turbocharged options. Front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive were available, depending on generation and specification. Major variations included the sporty Life Dunk and Life Diva, the more style-focused Pastel, and practical mainstream grades. Mobility-assist versions were also produced.

The Japanese Life remained below Honda’s larger compact cars and focused on accessibility, low running costs and ease of use. It was replaced in Honda’s kei lineup by newer N Series models after 2014. In 2020, Dongfeng Honda reused the Life name in China for a separate subcompact hatchback closely related to the Fit, offered in Sport and Crosstar forms.
