About Honda Horizon
The Honda Horizon was a large, body-on-frame SUV sold in Japan from February 1994 to October 1999. Supplied by Isuzu under a product-sharing agreement, it was closely based on the second-generation Isuzu Bighorn, known as the Trooper in many export markets. It gave Honda a conventional, heavy-duty four-wheel-drive model during the rapid growth of the SUV market.
The Horizon had one generation, offered only with a five-door long body and three-row seating for up to seven occupants. Early versions used either a 3.2-litre V6 petrol engine or a 3.1-litre turbo-diesel. A 1998 update introduced revised styling, a 3.5-litre V6 and a 3.0-litre direct-injection turbo-diesel. Four-speed automatic transmissions were widely fitted, while selected diesel models also had a five-speed manual. Four-wheel-drive systems varied by version and included part-time 4WD and electronically controlled Torque-on-Demand.
Major variants included Handling by Lotus and the better-equipped Handling by Lotus SE, named for their Lotus-tuned suspension. The XS was added later as a wider-bodied alternative. Honda-specific details included the grille, trim, colours and equipment.
Within Honda’s 1990s range, the Horizon served as a spacious, off-road-focused SUV above the brand’s smaller recreational vehicles. It is known for robust ladder-frame construction, substantial cabin space and its unusual combination of Isuzu engineering with Honda branding.
