About Honda Freed
The Honda Freed is a compact minivan introduced in Japan in 2008. It combines a relatively small exterior with the passenger space and flexible seating expected from a larger people carrier. Sliding rear doors, a low floor and good visibility make it particularly suited to family use and driving in crowded urban areas.
Three generations have been launched: the original model in 2008, the second generation in 2016 and the third generation in 2024. The second-generation range included the three-row Freed and the two-row Freed+, which placed greater emphasis on cargo capacity. Depending on the model and market, versions have offered front- or all-wheel drive, petrol or hybrid power, and seating layouts for five to eight occupants.
The current Japanese-market Freed is available in Air and Crosstar forms. Air has a simpler, more conventional minivan design, while Crosstar uses more rugged exterior detailing. Powertrain choices include a 1.5-litre petrol engine and Honda’s e:HEV two-motor hybrid system. Mobility-access versions are also offered.
Within Honda’s lineup, the Freed occupies the compact people-carrier role, providing greater seating versatility than a hatchback without the size of a full-scale minivan. It is known mainly for efficient packaging, easy access, manoeuvrability and adaptable passenger and luggage space.
