About Honda EV Plus
The Honda EV Plus was a battery-electric compact hatchback launched in 1997. Developed as a purpose-built electric vehicle rather than a conversion of an existing Honda, it formed part of the company’s response to growing interest in low-emission transport and California’s zero-emission vehicle requirements. Production was limited, with vehicles supplied mainly through leasing programmes in the United States and Japan.
Its tall, three-door body prioritised passenger space and practical urban use. The drivetrain combined a nickel-metal hydride battery with a Honda-developed brushless DC motor, regenerative braking and dedicated energy-management systems. Equipment included ABS, dual airbags and a heat-pump climate-control system, giving the EV Plus features comparable with conventional passenger cars of its period.
The model had one short-lived generation and was not developed into a broad range of trims or body styles. Its importance within Honda’s lineup came primarily from its role as an early real-world test bed for electric propulsion, battery management and charging technology. Positioned as a specialised, low-volume vehicle rather than a mainstream model, the EV Plus helped establish technical foundations later applied to Honda’s hybrid, battery-electric and fuel-cell programmes.
