About Honda CR-Z

The Honda CR-Z is a compact, front-wheel-drive hybrid coupe introduced in Japan in February 2010 and offered in the United States from the 2011 model year. It was built at Honda’s Suzuka factory and remained in production until the end of 2016. The model had one generation, with several styling, powertrain and equipment updates during its lifespan.

The CR-Z is known for combining a low-slung, two-door body with Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist hybrid system. Its 1.5-litre petrol engine was paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission. The manual version was particularly unusual among hybrid cars. Sport, Normal and Econ driving modes allowed the vehicle’s responses to be adjusted for different conditions.

Cabin configuration varied by market. North American cars had two seats, while versions for Europe and Japan used a compact 2+2 layout. Trim levels and special editions also differed, including CR-Z and EX grades in the US and Alpha and Beta versions in Japan. A Final Label edition marked the end of Japanese production.

Within Honda’s range, the CR-Z occupied a niche between efficiency-focused hybrids and conventional sports coupes. It is chiefly recognised for its distinctive wedge-shaped design, compact dimensions, driver-oriented cockpit and rare combination of hybrid assistance with an available manual gearbox.
