About Honda CR-X
The Honda CR-X is a compact, front-wheel-drive sports car introduced in 1983. Closely related to the Civic in engineering and market positioning, it combined economical running with a lower, more distinctive two-door body. The original model was called the Ballade Sports CR-X in Japan and was sold under different CR-X or Civic CRX names elsewhere.
The first two generations used a lightweight hatchback-coupé format. Depending on the market, they were configured as two-seaters or 2+2s and offered with a range of four-cylinder engines. Versions extended from fuel-economy-focused models to sportier Si, 16-valve and VTEC variants. The second generation, launched in 1987, placed greater emphasis on handling and performance while retaining compact dimensions and everyday practicality.
In 1992, the CR-X del Sol introduced a substantially different interpretation of the model. This two-seat open-top sports car featured a removable roof panel, with a powered TransTop system available in some markets. It was officially treated by Honda as the third CR-X generation, although its character differed from the earlier hatchbacks.
Within Honda’s range, the CR-X served as an accessible lightweight sports model rather than a high-powered flagship. It remains best known for efficient packaging, low weight, responsive engines, agile handling and styling that clearly separates it from conventional compact cars.
