About Honda Ballade

The Honda Ballade is a compact four-door sedan with a history closely linked to the Civic and City. Introduced in Japan in 1980, the original Ballade was positioned as a more refined saloon alternative within the Civic family. A second generation followed in 1983, accompanied by the sporty Ballade Sports CR-X, before the name was replaced in Japan by the Concerto in the late 1980s.

The Ballade became particularly significant in South Africa, where it arrived in 1982 and was locally assembled. For several generations, the badge was applied to Honda’s compact family sedans, including models related to the Civic. After an absence from the market, it returned in 2011 as the South African version of the Honda City, positioned below the Civic. Honda marketed the 2020 redesign as the eighth-generation Ballade, with updated styling, equipment and interior space. The model was discontinued locally in 2025.

Versions varied by period and market, ranging from straightforward family models to better-equipped luxury and sport-oriented derivatives. Later cars typically used economical four-cylinder petrol engines with manual or automatic transmissions, while newer versions adopted continuously variable transmissions. The Ballade is mainly known for practical packaging, comfortable road manners, efficient operation and Honda’s emphasis on build quality and durability.
