About GMC Vandura

The GMC Vandura was a full-size van sold for the 1971–1996 model years. It formed part of GMC’s G-series range and was the brand’s counterpart to the Chevrolet Van. The Vandura name appeared with the third generation of GM’s full-size van platform; earlier GMC G-series models were marketed mainly as the Handi-Van and Handi-Bus.

Designed primarily for commercial and utility use, the Vandura was offered in 1500, 2500 and 3500 series with different wheelbases and payload capacities. Configurations included cargo vans and cutaway chassis for specialist bodies. Passenger-oriented GMC vans were generally sold under the Rally name, while Vandura cargo models became widely used as the basis for camper, recreational and luxury conversion vans.

Engine availability varied by year and included six-cylinder, V6 and V8 petrol units, along with diesel V8 options in later production. Rear-wheel drive, a spacious rectangular body and broad configuration choice helped the Vandura serve trades, fleets, shuttle operators and private owners. Its long-lived design received mechanical, safety and styling updates rather than complete generational changes. The model is particularly associated with North American van culture and customised conversions. Production ended in 1996 as GMC introduced the Savana as its new full-size van.
