About GMC Typhoon

The GMC Typhoon is a limited-production, high-performance two-door SUV sold for the 1992 and 1993 model years. It was based on the compact GMC S-15 Jimmy and followed the Syclone performance pickup, bringing similar hardware to a more practical body with a rear seat and enclosed cargo area. Production was handled for GMC by Production Automotive Services in Michigan, with 4,697 regular-production examples built across the two model years.

A turbocharged and intercooled 4.3-litre V6 rated at 280 hp was paired with a four-speed automatic transmission and full-time all-wheel drive. Compared with the standard Jimmy, the Typhoon also received a lowered, performance-tuned suspension, upgraded braking equipment, wider wheels and tyres, distinctive lower-body cladding and a better-equipped interior. These features gave it unusually strong acceleration and road-focused handling for an SUV of its period.

The Typhoon had one short-lived generation rather than a long series of redesigns. The 1992 and 1993 versions shared the same basic body, drivetrain and character, with variations centred mainly on exterior colour and trim combinations. Positioned as a specialised halo model within GMC’s truck and utility range, it is best known as an early factory-built performance SUV. Its rarity, turbocharged powertrain and close relationship to the Syclone remain central to its identity.
