About GMC Tracker
The GMC Tracker was a small sport utility vehicle sold in Canada for the 1989–1991 model years. It was the GMC-badged version of the Suzuki Sidekick-based Tracker and was offered through Pontiac-Buick-GMC dealerships. Production formed part of the General Motors and Suzuki partnership at CAMI Automotive in Ingersoll, Ontario, which began building compact vehicles in 1989.
Unlike GMC’s larger utility vehicles of the period, the Tracker used a short, narrow body and was positioned as an accessible entry point to the brand’s SUV range. Its compact dimensions made it easy to manoeuvre, while its traditional chassis, short wheelbase and available four-wheel-drive hardware supported use on rough roads and trails.
The range included two-door hardtop and convertible body styles. Base models focused on simplicity, while SLE versions added equipment; an SLE convertible joined the line for 1990. The GMC model covered only the Tracker’s first generation and ended after 1991. For 1992, its place in Canadian GM dealerships was taken by the closely related Asüna Sunrunner.
The GMC Tracker is chiefly known for combining genuine small-SUV construction with low weight, straightforward mechanical design and unusual open-top versatility. Its brief production run and Canada-specific GMC identity also distinguish it from the more widely sold Geo, Chevrolet and Suzuki versions.
