About GMC TopKick

The GMC TopKick was a medium-duty commercial truck produced from 1980 to 2009. It sat above GMC’s conventional pickup range and was intended for vocational work requiring greater load capacity and more specialised body configurations. Most examples were supplied as chassis cabs for conversion into box trucks, dump trucks, tow trucks, utility vehicles, ambulances, buses and other purpose-built vehicles.

Three generations were offered. The first established the TopKick as a short-hood conventional truck, while the second-generation range arrived for 1990. A substantially redesigned third generation followed for 2003 on GM’s GMT560 architecture. Depending on year and specification, the line included C4500, C5500, C6500, C7500 and C8500 versions, spanning Classes 4 through 8. Regular-cab and crew-cab models were available, along with multiple wheelbases, axle layouts and gross weight ratings.

Gasoline and diesel engines were offered across the model’s life, with powertrain availability varying by series and application. The TopKick is chiefly known for its flexible chassis, broad range of commercial configurations and greater capability than pickup-based GMC trucks. Production ended on July 31, 2009, when General Motors withdrew from its established medium-duty truck line.
