About GMC Sonoma

The GMC Sonoma was a compact pickup sold in North America from 1991 through 2004. It continued GMC’s S-15 line under a new name and shared its basic platform and much of its engineering with the Chevrolet S-10. Within GMC’s range, the Sonoma sat below the full-size Sierra and offered open-bed utility in a smaller, more manoeuvrable package.

The Sonoma name covered the final years of the first-generation S-Series design from 1991 to 1993 and the complete second generation introduced for 1994. Depending on model year, buyers could choose regular, extended or four-door crew cabs, different bed configurations, and rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. Engine choices included four-cylinder units and several V6 engines, with the 4.3-litre V6 becoming a notable option for stronger performance and towing ability.

Variations ranged from basic work-oriented trucks to better-equipped SLS models. The early Sonoma GT added a street-performance theme, while the ZR2 package was designed for off-road use with increased ground clearance and upgraded suspension components. A crew cab joined the range for 2001, broadening its passenger-carrying role. Known for its straightforward body-on-frame design, useful size and wide choice of configurations, the Sonoma represented GMC in the compact pickup market before being succeeded by the larger Canyon.
