About GMC Savana

The GMC Savana is a full-size van introduced for the 1996 model year as the successor to GMC’s earlier Vandura and Rally vans. Developed by General Motors alongside the closely related Chevrolet Express, it has primarily served the North American commercial, fleet and passenger-transport markets.

The Savana has had two principal platform phases. Models from 1996 to 2002 used the GMT600 design, while a substantial update for 2003 introduced the GMT610 platform. Later revisions brought changes to styling, engines, transmissions, safety equipment and technology, but the basic body-on-frame layout has remained consistent.

Versions have included cargo and passenger vans in regular and extended lengths, with 1500, 2500 and 3500 series offered at different times. Cutaway models, including heavier 3500 and 4500 variants, provide a cab and chassis for bodies such as shuttle buses, ambulances, box trucks and recreational vehicles. Rear-wheel drive is standard on most examples, while all-wheel drive was available on some earlier models.

Within GMC’s lineup, the Savana is the brand’s traditional work van and complements its commercial pickup and chassis-cab models. It is known for straightforward construction, strong V6 and V8 powertrain options, useful towing and payload capacity, spacious interiors and broad upfitting potential.
