About GMC Safari
The GMC Safari was a mid-size van sold in North America from the 1985 through 2005 model years. Developed as GMC’s counterpart to the Chevrolet Astro, it combined the enclosed, family-friendly format of a minivan with a more truck-like layout. It occupied the space between conventional front-wheel-drive minivans and GMC’s larger full-size vans.
Safari models were offered in passenger and cargo configurations. Passenger versions could accommodate up to eight occupants, while cargo vans provided an enclosed load area for commercial and utility use. Regular- and extended-length bodies were available during the earlier years, with later models using the extended body. Rear-wheel drive was standard, and all-wheel drive became available for buyers needing additional traction.
The model is generally divided into two generations: 1985–1994 and 1995–2005. The second generation retained the established mechanical concept but introduced a longer, more rounded body, an updated cabin and revised safety equipment. Later versions largely used a 4.3-litre V6 with an automatic transmission, while trim levels ranged from basic work-oriented models to better-equipped SLE and SLT passenger vans.
Within GMC’s lineup, the Safari was known for its flexible interior, useful towing ability, relatively compact exterior dimensions and availability of all-wheel drive. It served families, tradespeople and conversion-van buyers before production ended after 2005.
