About GMC L-Series
The GMC L-Series was a range of medium- and heavy-duty commercial trucks introduced for 1960. It used a 72-inch steel tilt cab with a set-back front axle, giving it compact cab-over-engine proportions. Tilting the cab provided broad access to the engine and other mechanical components, while the short overall layout supported good manoeuvrability in urban and vocational work.
Initially offered from the L4000 to L7000 series, the range covered several weight ratings and chassis configurations. GMC sold L-Series trucks for applications including local delivery, fuel transport, flatbed and van bodies, construction equipment, concrete mixers, fire apparatus and tractor-trailer work. Depending on model and year, power came from GMC V6 or V12 petrol engines and a selection of diesel engines.
The L-Series remained one long-running model family rather than progressing through clearly named generations. Its basic steel tilt-cab design continued for more than 20 years, with changes to styling, model availability, chassis ratings and powertrains. GMC discontinued the range in 1981; the Forward series later filled its place in the company’s medium-duty tilt-cab line-up.
Positioned below GMC’s largest long-haul cab-over trucks, the L-Series was known primarily as a practical working vehicle. Its adaptable chassis, compact dimensions and service-friendly cab made it suitable for a wide range of fleet and specialist uses.
