About GMC Jimmy

The GMC Jimmy was a truck-based sport utility vehicle known for combining pickup-derived construction with enclosed passenger and cargo space. The name first appeared on GMC’s full-size two-door SUV for the 1970 model year. Closely related to the Chevrolet K5 Blazer, this version offered rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive and, on earlier models, a removable rear roof. It occupied GMC’s rugged personal-utility role before the full-size line was renamed Yukon for 1992.

A smaller S-15 Jimmy joined the range for 1983 as GMC’s counterpart to the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. Based on the S-15 compact pickup platform, it was initially a two-door model; a longer four-door body arrived for 1991. Two main compact generations were produced, with the second introduced for 1995. Depending on year and specification, buyers could choose rear- or four-wheel drive, manual or automatic transmissions, and several four-cylinder or V6 engines. Trim levels ranged from basic utility versions to more extensively equipped models.

The Jimmy was positioned below GMC’s full-size SUVs and appealed to drivers seeking manageable dimensions with traditional body-on-frame durability and off-road ability. Regular US sales ended after 2001, while limited Canadian and fleet production continued through 2005 as the GMC Envoy took over its market position.
