About GMC Forward

The GMC Forward was a low-cab-forward commercial truck sold in North America from the mid-1980s into the 1990s. It was developed through General Motors’ relationship with Isuzu and was closely related to the Isuzu Elf/N-Series. Unlike GMC’s conventional pickups and larger bonneted trucks, the Forward placed its cab above the engine to maximise usable chassis length within a compact overall footprint.

Primarily supplied as a chassis cab, the Forward could be fitted with box, flatbed, dump, recovery and other vocational bodies. Its short cab and tight turning characteristics made it particularly suitable for urban delivery, local distribution and service work. A tilting cab provided access to the engine and major mechanical components.

The range included W4, W5, W6 and W7 versions, covering several light- and medium-duty weight classes, wheelbases and payload requirements. Diesel power was a defining feature of much of the line, although specifications varied by model and year.

Two main design phases reflected the fourth- and fifth-generation Isuzu Elf/N-Series platforms introduced in 1984 and 1993. Within GMC’s commercial range, the Forward offered a manoeuvrable cab-over alternative to conventional trucks. It is best known for practical packaging, body-mounting versatility and work-focused design.
