About GMC Envoy

The GMC Envoy is a mid-size, body-on-frame SUV sold for the 1998–2000 and 2002–2009 model years. It began as an upscale version of the GMC Jimmy, adding more comfort and appearance equipment. For 2002, the Envoy became a stand-alone model and replaced the four-door Jimmy in GMC’s range. It shared its basic architecture with the Chevrolet TrailBlazer and several other General Motors SUVs.

The second-generation Envoy offered rear- or four-wheel drive and combined a comfortable cabin with conventional SUV capabilities. Most versions used a 4.2-litre inline-six engine, while selected models offered a 5.3-litre V8. Core trims included SLE and SLT, with the more luxurious Denali joining the range later.

GMC also produced the extended-length Envoy XL, which added a third seating row. The distinctive Envoy XUV featured a retractable rear roof section and a configurable cargo area, providing some pickup-like flexibility within an enclosed SUV body.

Within GMC’s lineup, the Envoy sat below the full-size Yukon and appealed to buyers wanting traditional truck-based construction in a smaller package. Production ended after the 2009 model year as the brand shifted towards crossover-based utility vehicles. The Envoy remains notable for its broad range of configurations, strong road presence and unusual XUV variation.
