About GMC C/K

The GMC C/K was a family of full-size, body-on-frame trucks introduced for the 1960 model year. Developed alongside the Chevrolet C/K, it served as a core part of GMC’s light- and heavy-duty range for several decades. In general, C identified two-wheel-drive models and K identified four-wheel-drive versions.

Four main generations appeared. The original 1960–1966 trucks were followed by the 1967–1972 “Action Line” series, the 1973–1987 “Rounded Line” models commonly known as square-body trucks, and the more aerodynamic GMT400 generation introduced for 1988. Some older-body trucks continued as R/V models through 1991 while the new series was phased in. During the GMT400 era, GMC increasingly used Sierra as the public-facing model name.

The range included half-ton, three-quarter-ton and one-ton pickups, along with chassis-cab and heavier commercial variants. Depending on year, buyers could choose regular, extended or crew cabs, different bed styles and lengths, and petrol or diesel engines. Related C/K platforms also supported GMC utility vehicles, although the pickup remained the central version.

Known for practical construction, broad configuration choices and strong work capability, the C/K covered both commercial and personal-use roles. It was GMC’s direct competitor to other North American full-size pickups and established the foundation for the modern Sierra lineup.
