About GMC Chevette

The GMC Chevette was a compact passenger car produced in Brazil for the Argentine market from 1992 to 1995. It was a locally marketed version of the Brazilian Chevrolet Chevette and formed part of General Motors’ international T-car family, which also included models such as the Opel Kadett C and Isuzu Gemini.

Unlike GMC’s usual range of pickups, vans and commercial vehicles, the Chevette was a small family sedan. It is notable as the only production sedan to carry GMC badging and was the brand’s first model officially offered in Argentina. Within the local market, it served as an affordable, conventional alternative in the compact-car class.

The range comprised two-door and four-door sedans, with petrol and Isuzu-supplied diesel engine options. Its traditional layout placed the engine longitudinally at the front and drove the rear wheels. A related compact pickup was sold as the GMC 500.

The GMC Chevette did not pass through separate generations during its short production run. Instead, it represented the final Argentine-market phase of the established South American Chevette design. The model is known for simple mechanical construction, practical compact dimensions and its unusual place in GMC history. It left the market in 1995 as General Motors shifted towards newer front-wheel-drive compact cars, including the Chevrolet Corsa.
