About GMC Brigadier
The GMC Brigadier was a heavy-duty conventional truck offered for the 1978–1989 model years. Built at GMC’s Pontiac, Michigan, plant, it represented the second generation of GM’s H/J-series short-hood trucks and was positioned between GMC’s largest medium-duty models and the larger General conventional.
Available in Class 7 and Class 8 configurations, the Brigadier served as both a straight truck and a semi-tractor. Its adaptable chassis suited dump bodies, mixers, refuse equipment, delivery work, construction fleets, short-haul transport and other vocational or severe-service roles. The range included 8000- and 9500-series versions, with single- and tandem-rear-axle layouts and several diesel powertrain choices offered during its production life.
The Brigadier remained within one main model generation, receiving specification and equipment changes rather than a complete redesign. Its steel cab, short conventional bonnet and straightforward ladder-frame construction reflected the practical priorities of North American fleet operators. After GM formed its heavy-truck venture with Volvo, the model continued briefly under WhiteGMC branding, including an optional sloped-bonnet version, before production ended after the 1989 model year. It is chiefly remembered as a versatile, durable work truck from the final period of GMC’s traditional heavy-truck business.
