About GMC Astro
The GMC Astro was a North American Class 8 cab-over-engine heavy truck built for the 1969–1987 model years. Produced by GMC Truck and Coach in Pontiac, Michigan, it replaced the brand’s earlier compact cab-over and served as GMC’s principal cab-over tractor alongside its conventional heavy trucks.
Often identified as the Astro 95, it was intended mainly for regional and long-distance haulage. Its layout placed the driver above the engine, providing a short tractor length and good forward visibility. The aluminium cab tilted to provide engine access.
The Astro remained within one broad generation, although its styling, interior, cooling system and equipment were updated during production. Configurations included single- and tandem-rear-axle chassis, plus day-cab and sleeper-cab versions. Depending on year and application, engine choices came from Detroit Diesel, Cummins and Caterpillar.
Within GMC’s range, the Astro occupied the top heavy-duty cab-over position rather than the light- or medium-truck market. It is known for its tall, wide cab, distinctive flat-front appearance, broad powertrain choice and widespread use in 1970s and 1980s freight operations. Production ended after 1987 as General Motors reorganised its heavy-truck business and North American operators increasingly adopted conventional-cab tractors.
