About GMC 500

The GMC 500 was a compact, two-door pickup produced by General Motors do Brasil and sold in selected South American markets, most notably Argentina, during the early 1990s. It was the GMC-badged counterpart of the Chevrolet Chevy 500 and shared its basic design with the Chevette passenger-car family.

Unlike GMC’s larger North American trucks, the 500 was a car-derived light commercial vehicle. It combined a small cab and open cargo bed with a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Most examples used a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and a manual transmission, although specifications could vary by market and model year.

The GMC 500 did not progress through several distinct generations. Instead, it represented the final evolution of the long-running Chevy 500 design, with changes mainly involving trim, equipment and exterior details. Its compact dimensions made it suitable for urban deliveries, small businesses and personal transport where a full-size pickup was unnecessary.

Within GMC’s regional range, the 500 occupied an entry-level commercial position and competed with other small, passenger-car-based pickups. It is chiefly known for its simple mechanical layout, practical load bed, rear-wheel drive and unusual place in GMC’s international product history. Production ended in the mid-1990s as newer front-wheel-drive compact pickups replaced this older design.
