About Geo Tracker

Introduced for the 1989 model year, the Geo Tracker was a small sport utility vehicle derived from the Suzuki Sidekick. It formed part of General Motors’ Geo range of compact, import-based vehicles. Production took place mainly at the GM-Suzuki CAMI plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, although some early vehicles came from Japan. Geo badging continued through 1997 before the model became the Chevrolet Tracker for 1998.

The range centred on short-wheelbase two-door models with either a fixed hardtop or a folding soft top. A longer four-door hardtop joined the US Geo lineup for 1996, providing more rear-seat and cargo space. Depending on model year and configuration, the Tracker offered two-wheel drive or part-time four-wheel drive, manual or automatic transmissions, and 1.6-litre four-cylinder engines. Base and better-equipped LSi versions covered much of the range.

Within Geo’s mainly car-focused lineup, the Tracker served as its utility model and a lower-cost alternative to larger SUVs. Its compact dimensions, simple construction and available low-range four-wheel-drive system suited narrow trails as well as urban use. The two-door convertible is its most distinctive form, while hardtop and four-door versions added practicality. Modest performance, limited space in two-door models and basic refinement were trade-offs for its manoeuvrability and straightforward design.
