About Geo Spectrum
The Geo Spectrum was a subcompact passenger car sold in the United States for the 1989 model year. It was the final version of the Chevrolet Spectrum, renamed as General Motors introduced Geo as a brand for small, import-based vehicles. Built in Japan by Isuzu, it was closely related to the Isuzu Gemini and I-Mark.
The Spectrum was offered as a four-door sedan or three-door hatchback, both with a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout. US models used a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, paired with either a five-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission. Unlike earlier Chevrolet-badged versions, the Geo range did not include a turbocharged model.
Within Geo’s initial line-up, the Spectrum filled the conventional subcompact role. It was larger and more traditional in design than the Metro while remaining below the roomier Prizm. Its short production run made it a transitional model rather than a long-term part of the brand’s range.
The Spectrum is known for straightforward engineering, light construction and practical body choices. It prioritised basic, economical transport over performance or luxury, reflecting Geo’s early focus on affordable small cars. Its single-year presence under the Geo name also makes it one of the brand’s less common models today.
