About Geo Prizm
The Geo Prizm was a front-wheel-drive compact car sold in the United States for the 1990–1997 model years. It replaced the Chevrolet Nova and served as Geo’s conventional family car, positioned above the smaller Metro. The Prizm was closely related to the Toyota Corolla and Sprinter, reflecting Geo’s strategy of offering vehicles developed with established Japanese manufacturers.
Production took place at the NUMMI factory in Fremont, California, a joint venture between General Motors and Toyota. Although the Prizm had Geo-specific styling and trim details, it shared its basic platform, engines and many components with contemporary Toyota models. This connection is central to the model’s identity and distinguishes it from GM-designed compact cars of the period.
The first generation was available as a four-door sedan and, briefly, a five-door hatchback. Trim levels included base, better-equipped LSi and performance-oriented GSi versions. The redesigned 1993 model became sedan-only and offered base and LSi trims, with 1.6- and 1.8-litre four-cylinder engines depending on specification. The Prizm is best known as a practical, economical compact with straightforward controls and substantial Toyota parts commonality. After the Geo marque was discontinued, the model continued as the Chevrolet Prizm from 1998.
