About Geo Metro

The Geo Metro was a front-wheel-drive subcompact sold in North America from the 1989 through 1997 model years. Developed from the Suzuki Cultus/Swift as part of General Motors’ cooperation with Suzuki, it succeeded the Chevrolet Sprint and occupied the smallest, most economy-focused position in the Geo passenger-car range. Production was closely linked to the CAMI joint-venture plant in Ingersoll, Ontario.

Early Metros were offered mainly as three-door and five-door hatchbacks, with a two-door convertible available for several model years. A redesigned range arrived for 1995 with a more rounded three-door hatchback and a four-door sedan. Depending on year and body style, power came from small 1.0-litre three-cylinder or 1.3-litre four-cylinder petrol engines, paired with manual or automatic transmissions.

The Metro is best known for low fuel consumption, compact dimensions and light weight rather than strong performance or extensive equipment. Its simple mechanical layout and practical hatchback packaging made it a basic urban and commuter car, while the convertible provided an unusual variation on the same small-car platform. After the Geo brand was phased out, the model continued as the Chevrolet Metro from 1998 through 2001.
