About Ford Verona
The Ford Verona was a compact saloon developed for the Brazilian market and produced from 1989 to 1996, with a brief transition between its two generations. It formed part of Ford’s Escort family and was related to the European Ford Orion, but its design and specifications were adapted for local conditions.
The first generation, built from 1989 to 1992, was a two-door saloon with Escort-based engineering and a distinctive extended rear body. It arrived as Ford’s replacement for the ageing Del Rey and offered a larger, separate luggage compartment than the Escort hatchback. This model was also closely related to the Volkswagen Apollo, reflecting the component-sharing strategy of Autolatina, the regional Ford and Volkswagen partnership.
A redesigned Verona followed in 1993. Based on the newer Escort and Orion platform, it adopted a more conventional four-door body and remained in production through 1996. Depending on year and specification, versions included LX, GL, GLX, Ghia and the sportier S.
Engine choices varied across the production run. Early cars used Ford’s 1.6-litre CHT or Volkswagen-sourced 1.8-litre AP engines, while later models offered 1.8- and 2.0-litre AP units, including fuel-injected versions. The Verona is mainly known as Ford’s practical three-box alternative to the Escort hatchback, combining familiar mechanical components with greater rear-seat access and saloon-style luggage space.
