About Ford Transcontinental
The Ford Transcontinental was a heavy-duty cab-over truck developed by Ford Europe for long-distance and high-weight transport. Produced from 1975 to 1984, it was assembled mainly in Amsterdam, with later right-hand-drive production in Sandbach, England. It occupied the top of Ford’s European commercial vehicle range, above the company’s medium-duty trucks.
The range included tractor units and rigid trucks, principally in 4x2 and 6x4 configurations. Rather than relying entirely on Ford-designed mechanical parts, the Transcontinental combined equipment from established suppliers. Most versions used 14-litre Cummins six-cylinder turbo-diesel engines, Fuller manual transmissions and heavy-duty axles, while the cab was derived from a Berliet design.
Two broad versions are generally recognised. The original model was followed by an updated series for the 1979 model year, often called the Mk II, with revised styling and a renewed Cummins engine range. Output levels and weight ratings varied by market and application.
Known for its tall, spacious cab, strong performance and robust chassis, the Transcontinental was aimed at major European haulage operators. Production remained relatively limited, but the model established Ford in the European heavy-truck sector before the broader Cargo range took its place.
