About Ford Trader
The Ford Trader was a cab-over light- and medium-duty truck sold mainly in Australia from the late 1970s through the late 1990s. It was derived from Mazda’s Titan and export-market T-Series, reflecting the wider product-sharing relationship between Ford and Mazda. The Trader gave Ford a compact commercial truck for urban delivery, trade and fleet work.
Its main generations followed the development of the Mazda truck on which it was based. An initial model was followed by a redesigned range in the early 1980s and a further generation around 1989, with later styling and mechanical updates. Variants included model designations such as 0409, 0509 and 0811, covering different weight and payload classes.
The range was offered primarily as a rear-wheel-drive cab chassis, allowing buyers to fit trays, box bodies, tippers, service bodies and other specialised equipment. Both standard and crew-cab versions appeared, while diesel engines and manual transmissions were common. Engine size, wheelbase, cab arrangement and gross vehicle mass varied by model and year.
Within Ford’s commercial lineup, the Trader served as a practical forward-control alternative to conventional-cab trucks. It is best known for efficient packaging, a useful range of configurations and a straightforward, work-focused design suited to operators needing more capacity than a van or utility without moving to a much larger truck.
