About Ford Tempo
The Ford Tempo was a compact passenger car sold in North America for the 1984–1994 model years. It replaced the rear-wheel-drive Fairmont and marked Ford’s move towards front-wheel drive and more aerodynamic styling in its mainstream range. Positioned below the larger Taurus, it was aimed at buyers seeking affordable family and commuter transport.
The Tempo came as a four-door sedan and two-door coupe. Its production run is generally divided into 1984–1987 and 1988–1994 versions. The later cars adopted updated bodywork and a more contemporary cabin, although the coupe evolved more gradually than the sedan. Trims varied by year, ranging from basic L and popular GL models to better-equipped LX sedans and sport-oriented GL Sport or GLS versions.
Most examples used a 2.3-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, paired with manual or automatic transmissions depending on specification. A 3.0-litre V6 became available for 1992, giving later models stronger performance. Selected versions also offered all-wheel drive from 1987 through 1991, an uncommon feature in an affordable American compact car of the period.
The Tempo is best known as practical, high-volume transport from the 1980s and early 1990s. Its simple packaging and broad choice of body styles and equipment placed it between Ford’s smaller economy cars and larger family sedans. Production ended after 1994, when the Ford Contour took over its role in the North American lineup.
