About Ford Telstar

The Ford Telstar was a mid-size passenger car created through Ford’s partnership with Mazda. Introduced in Japan in 1982 and in markets including Australia and New Zealand in 1983, it was closely related to the Mazda Capella/626, with Ford-specific styling, trim and equipment. In several countries it replaced the Cortina as Ford’s mainstream front-wheel-drive family car.

The name covered five Mazda-derived generations, although availability and timing differed by market. Most ranges included four-door sedans and five-door liftbacks, with the sportier liftback commonly carrying the TX5 name. Station wagons were offered in selected countries and generations. Engine choices varied widely, including four-cylinder petrol and diesel units, turbocharged versions and, on later models, V6 power. Some higher-specification variants also featured four-wheel steering.

Telstars were assembled or sold across Asia, Australasia and Africa, with production arrangements including plants in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Malaysia as well as Japanese imports. In Ford’s range, the model generally sat above compact cars such as the Laser and below larger models such as the Falcon where both were available. It became known for practical packaging, a broad choice of versions and Mazda-based engineering. The Mondeo progressively replaced it in many markets during the 1990s.
