About Ford Taunus
The Ford Taunus was a long-running Ford Germany nameplate, introduced in 1939 and used across several distinct passenger-car families until European production ended in 1982. Named after Germany’s Taunus mountain range, it developed from an early compact saloon into a broad range of mainstream family cars. Post-war series included the smaller 12M and 15M, alongside the larger and more upmarket 17M, 20M and 26M.
The best-known later version is the Taunus TC, launched in 1970 as the continental European counterpart to the British Ford Cortina. Produced through three main TC generations, it occupied the family-car class between the Escort and the larger Consul and Granada. Depending on year and market, it was offered as a two- or four-door saloon, Turnier estate or coupé, with four-cylinder or V6 petrol engines. TC models used a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout.
The Taunus became known for straightforward engineering, practical accommodation and a wide choice of trims and body styles. Production took place in several countries, including Germany, Belgium, Argentina, South Korea and Turkey, with specifications adapted to local markets. The Sierra replaced it in Europe, while revised Turkish-built versions remained in production until 1994.
