About Ford Sierra

The Ford Sierra was a mid-size family car developed by Ford of Europe and produced from 1982 to 1993. It replaced the Cortina in Britain and the Taunus in continental Europe, introducing a rounded, aerodynamically influenced design to Ford’s mainstream range. Positioned above the Escort and below the Granada and later Scorpio, it was eventually succeeded by the Mondeo.

Although essentially one model generation, the Sierra is commonly divided into early and facelifted versions following a major update in 1987. The range included three- and five-door hatchbacks, an estate and the four-door Sapphire saloon. A Sierra-based P100 pick-up was also offered in some markets. Most models were rear-wheel drive, while selected variants featured four-wheel drive.

The Sierra covered a wide market, from basic four-cylinder petrol and diesel models to V6-powered and high-performance derivatives. Notable versions included the XR4i, XR4x4 and turbocharged RS Cosworth, later joined by the Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth. These cars gave the model a strong motorsport association, while regular versions were valued for practicality, comfortable cruising and broad engine, trim and body-style choices. Its distinctive shape, rear-drive layout and varied range made it one of Ford’s most recognisable European cars of its era.
