About Ford Scorpio

The Ford Scorpio was Ford of Europe’s large executive car, produced from 1985 to 1998 as the successor to the Granada. It sat above the Sierra and later the Mondeo, serving as Ford’s flagship passenger model for buyers seeking greater space, comfort and equipment. In the UK and Ireland, the first generation retained the Granada name until 1994. A related version was briefly sold in North America as the Merkur Scorpio.

Two main generations were produced. The first was launched as a five-door hatchback, with saloon and estate versions added later. The second generation arrived in 1994 with distinctive rounded styling and was offered as a saloon or estate. Most versions had a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, while selected first-generation models were available with four-wheel drive.

The range included four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, Cologne V6 units and a performance-focused 2.9-litre 24-valve V6 developed with Cosworth. Manual and automatic transmissions were offered, along with equipment-led versions such as the Ghia.

The Scorpio is especially known for having anti-lock brakes as standard across the range at launch, which was unusual among European volume-production cars at the time. It won the 1986 European Car of the Year award and was valued for its spacious cabin, long-distance comfort and generous equipment. Production ended in 1998 without a direct successor.
