About Ford S-MAX
The Ford S-MAX is a five-door MPV developed mainly for European markets and produced from 2006 to 2023. It combined seven-seat family practicality with lower, more streamlined styling and more car-like handling than many traditional people carriers. Within Ford’s range, it sat between the smaller C-MAX and the larger, more conventionally spacious Galaxy.
Two generations were produced. The first established the model’s flexible cabin, individually folding rear seats and driving-focused character, and was named European Car of the Year for 2007. The second generation arrived in 2015 with updated styling, technology and safety equipment while retaining a versatile three-row layout. A later refresh introduced further equipment and powertrain changes.
Depending on year and market, the S-MAX was offered with petrol and diesel engines, manual or automatic transmissions, and all-wheel drive on selected versions. A petrol-electric hybrid joined the range near the end of production. Trim choices included practical mainstream specifications as well as sportier or more upmarket versions such as ST-Line and Vignale.
The S-MAX became known for balancing passenger and luggage flexibility with responsive road manners. It occupied a distinctive position as a family MPV for buyers wanting more engaging handling and sleeker styling than a full-size people carrier. Production ended in April 2023 as demand shifted towards SUVs and crossovers.
