About Ford Ranchero

The Ford Ranchero is a two-door coupe utility that combines passenger-car construction and styling with an integrated open cargo bed. Produced for the 1957–1979 model years, it occupied a distinctive position between Ford’s conventional cars and pickup trucks.

Across seven generations, the Ranchero changed with Ford’s passenger-car range rather than using a dedicated platform. Early versions were based on full-size Ford models, followed by the compact Falcon. Later generations shared their foundations and design themes with the Fairlane, Torino, Gran Torino and, finally, the LTD II.

This progression gave the nameplate several distinct characters. Falcon-based models were relatively compact and practical, while the Fairlane- and Torino-derived versions offered more substantial dimensions and a wider range of engines. The final LTD II-based models reflected the larger, more formal styling of late-1970s Ford cars.

Versions varied by year and included basic utility-oriented models as well as the better-equipped Ranchero 500. The Ranchero GT added a sportier appearance and access to stronger engine choices, while the Ranchero Squire was distinguished by simulated woodgrain exterior trim.

The Ranchero is best known for blending car-like comfort, styling and road manners with useful cargo capacity. Its long production run and changing donor models make it a varied classic Ford line rather than a single, uniform design.
