About Ford Probe
The Ford Probe is a front-engine, front-wheel-drive three-door liftback coupé sold for the 1989–1997 model years. Developed through Ford’s partnership with Mazda, it shared core engineering with the Mazda MX-6 and 626 family and was assembled in Flat Rock, Michigan. It gave Ford a modern sport-compact model positioned separately from the rear-wheel-drive Mustang.
Two generations were produced. The first featured angular late-1980s styling and a range of four-cylinder and V6 versions, with the Probe GT distinguished by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The redesigned 1993 model adopted smoother, more aerodynamic bodywork and a more focused range. In North America, the main second-generation choices were four-cylinder base and SE models and the GT, which used a 2.5-litre V6. Manual and automatic transmissions were available, depending on version and market.
The Probe is known for combining sporty styling and responsive handling with the everyday utility of a large rear hatch and folding rear seat. Its Mazda-derived engineering gave it a distinctive place in Ford’s 1990s line-up: more compact and import-influenced than the Mustang, but more specialised than the brand’s mainstream cars. Production ended after the 1997 model year.
